Things to consider when designing a flag Good design for a flag is a matter of combining the basic shape, proportion and design element into a pleasing, but simple, easily identifiable pattern that contains the desired symbolism.
Each design element - shape, colours, emblem or symbol - can have any of a number of interpretations, many of which are purely of a personal type. Although there are many 'standard' symbolic meanings, there are a few basic rules to good vexillography or flag design;
- A design should be simple and striking, a good rule of thumb is that a child ought to be able to draw it and know what it represents.
- The design should be symmetrical to a degree.
- The elements of the design should not be overly complicated or impossible to recognise when displayed on the reverse of the flag (for this reason lettering is considered in bad taste except of course in the corporate world of brand identity.)
- Both traditional and avant-garde symbols should be easily recognisable.
When considering your design please remember to take into account how and where you will fly your flag, indoors, outdoors or perhaps for ceremonial display only. Remember careful consideration will need to be given to the range of materials chosen to get the best from your flag. If your flag is to be flown from a flag pole, you need to consider the scale or dimensions of your flag in relation to any flag pole used to fly it. As a general rule of thumb, allow 1 metre of flag length for every 3 metres of flagpole height.
